Dog: Brucellosis

An infection caused by the bacteria Brucella canis. Brucellosis is spread through contact with infected, aborted fetuses and discharge from the uterus of infected bitches. It can also be spread during mating and through maternal milk. The bacteria enters the body through the mouth and spreads to the spleen, uterus, placenta and prostate gland. In females, infection can lead to infertility, abortion or weak puppies. In males, infection can cause orchitis and infertility. Brucellosis can also cause diskospondylitis. It is diagnosed by testing a dead puppy or blood testing an infected adult. Brucellosis is difficult to treat because the bacteria lives inside the dog’s cells. A combination of antibiotics is used for several weeks for treatment. Infected dogs should not be used for breeding and should be castrated or spayed.
